While Netflix doesn’t have a lot of fantasy films in its catalogue, the ones it does contain are absolute gems.
Nimona (2023)
Netflix’s newest original fantasy film, Nimona, is an animated adventure starring Riz Amed and Chloe Grace Moretz in which a brave and loyal knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. To clear his name, the knight teams up with the shape-shifting Nimona to uncover the truth.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Easily proclaimed as the greatest fantasy franchise ever produced, it was close between The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. However, as The Fellowship of the Ring is the first in the trilogy, it had to make the list as you can never watch one without watching all of them.
Errementari (2017)
A troubled Spanish blacksmith holds a demon hostage, torturing it for his pleasure. One day, a young orphan girl stumbles upon the blacksmith’s shop and unknowingly releases the vengeful demon out into the world.
Big Fish (2003)
Starring Ewen McGregor, Big Fish is an alternative take on the fantasy genre. Big Fish follows the incredible, fantastical life of Edward Bloom, showcasing his incredible encounters with bizarre creatures and strange communities, with the narrative being framed as Edward telling his son about his life as stories.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
A true British classic, Monty Python and the Holy Grail takes the iconic comedy group back in time to the middle ages in the place of King Arthur and the knights of Camelot as they set out on a quest to find the holy grail.
A Monster Calls (2016)
Another alternative take on the fantasy genre. A Monster Calls follows Connor, a teenage boy who befriends an ancient tree monster to help him cope with bullying at school and the terminal illness of his mother.
Labyrinth (1986)
With just 13 hours to save her baby brother, 16-year-old Sara must solve the labyrinth of the evil Goblin King Jareth (played excellently by the late David Bowie).
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021)
While Netflix’s The Witcher series is definitely lacking, this animated spin-off delivers hard on its promise of action, monsters, mystery, and romance, set years before the events of Netflix’s main series.
Hook (1991)
Forget what the critics said, Hook, starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman, is an absolute classic retelling of the Peter Pan story set years after the original, with a grown-up Peter Pan attempting to rescue his children from an aging Captain Hook.
Spirited Away (2001)
The most popular of Studio Ghibli’s films, this list could easily be filled entirely with Hayao Miyazaki’s movies. Spirited Away follows Chihiro as she attempts to rescue her parents and escape from the spirit world.
