10 Films Where Protagonists Triumph, but at What Cost?

Written By William Butterworth

Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

Just because a protagonist is alive at the end of the movie doesn’t mean they’re in for a good time. Sometimes, the consequences of their actions or events in the movie might catch up with them off-screen.

Check out these movies where the protagonist isn’t actually well-off by the end of the film.

WALL-E (2008)

We see the humans returning to the Earth, which seems like a great victory. Except for the past several years, humans have been lazy tubes of meat doing nothing but consuming food and entertainment. They now have to clean up the planet.

Earth is probably doomed.

Scream 2 (1997)

At the end of Scream 2, Sid is walking around, seemingly happy that she escaped Ghostface. However, she also just lost all her friends. Did she really win? Or did she just get PTSD?

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Following the events of The Dark Knight Rises, most people probably would have fled the city. Such a massive loss of people would impact Gotham City’s economy and essentially wreck it. The city would never be the same.

M3GAN (2022)

Making killer robots comes with consequences. Although we don’t see it in the movie, you can be sure that M3GAN’s creator ends up with lawsuit after lawsuit. She’ll probably end up in jail, and her company might just go bankrupt, too.

The Breakfast Club (1985)

The end of The Breakfast Club ends on a lighter note. Kids from different backgrounds connected and realized how similar they were. However, as each student returns home, John has to return to an abusive situation.

The movie may have a happy ending, but one of the characters is headed for a bleak home environment.

Ready Or Not (2019)

Even though Grace triumphs at the end of the movie, there’s a very good chance she’s headed to jail. There are bodies in the house, and she’s a little worse for wear. She’ll either end up in jail or head off to an institution.

The Truman Show (1998)

Truman is eventually able to escape the film set where every second of his life was filmed and enters the real world. Except now Truman is going to have to face life as the world’s most famous celebrity.

Did he jump out of the pan and into the fire?

Back to the Future (1985)

Back to the Future proves that certain actions have consequences. When Marty returns to his normal timeline, he discovers that his parents are slightly different. His actions in the past made them into slightly different versions of themselves.

This means that Marty doesn’t really know the current version of his parents, and they don’t really know him. He may end up feeling like an imposter within his own family.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

In the movie, the villain creates a device that makes people extremely aggressive and start killing each other. Realistically, the losses would have been devastating. However, the film doesn’t exactly go into detail. It wouldn’t be surprising if half or more of the world’s population ended up murdered during that time.

The Avengers: Endgame (2019)

The goal of The Avengers: Endgame is to bring back everyone lost during the Blip. However, no one actually put thought into what that would look like after it happened.

The world had just adjusted to half of its population disappearing. Having those people suddenly reappear would cause massive housing and economic turmoil.

But the world is saved, I guess?
