10 Movie Moments That Aged Terribly

Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

There’s no better way to examine how a society’s standard has changed than by watching movies. What was once acceptable is no longer tolerated by the morales of today.

Take a look at some of the movies that haven’t aged like fine wine.

Moonfall (2022)

You need only look at the state of Twitter to see why this movie has already aged terribly. In one of the scenes, a character bemoans, “What would Elon do?”

He’d destroy a billion-dollar company, probably.

American Pie (1999)

Now, there are only a few moments that have aged well in American Pie. One of the most prominent is when the cast decides to send one of the girls’ nude pictures to basically everyone in town.

That might be illegal now.

Revenge of the Nerds (1984)

Another problematic movie is Revenge of the Nerds. There is a slew of uncomfortable scenes that haven’t aged well. One of the most dire is when one of the main characters dons a mask to make the object of his affection think that he’s her boyfriend.

They end up having sex without her realizing it isn’t her boyfriend.

Grease (1978)

Yes, even a classic like Grease has a problematic moment. During the drive-in theater scene, Danny starts to get a little physical with Sandy. She tells him “no” several times, but he continues to push his advances.

Luckily, Danny comes to his senses by the end of the movie and puts aside his machoism.

The Breakfast Club (1985)

One of the greatest coming-of-age stories is The Breakfast Club. While many of the movie’s themes remain true today, there is one slightly cringe moment.

In the movie, Allison ends up receiving a makeover. Suddenly, all the guys are into her, and she’s receiving attention and respect. It’s as if the movie is suggesting that all you need to get by is to put on some makeup and completely change who you are as a person.

American Beauty (1999)

Between Kevin Spacey’s many scandals and the content of the movie, you can bet that American Beauty would not exist today. No American director in their right mind would make a movie like this now.

It features Spacey, who has an obsession with his daughter’s best friend, a minor. Some movies simply don’t need revivals.

Sixteen Candles (1984)

Another coming-of-age great from the 1980s is Sixteen Candles. It features a few problematic tropes, but none quite so cringe as date rape.

In a panty raid gone too far, Jake, played by Michael Schoeffling, tells Anthony Michael Hall’s character to sleep with his girlfriend. By this point, his girlfriend is far too drunk to give consent.

They end up having sex while she’s drunk.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

While Kevin is exploring New York, he takes a trip to the World Trade Centers. Since this film occurred in 1992, they remain standing. Seeing the buildings in the film today is quite jarring for anyone old enough to remember 9/11.

Wonder Woman: 1984 (2020)

Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, receives a second chance at love when her lover, who died in the previous movie, Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, possesses another man’s body.

The problem is obvious here. The man whose body Steve possesses didn’t give consent to that possession. Even worse, Wonder Woman ends up having sex with Steve in that body.

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

While Lady and the Tramp is a classic Disney film, there is a very uncomfortable representation of Asian people in it. Complete with a song, two Siamese cats end up demonstrating some terrible stereotypes of Siamese people.

It’s definitely a scene to skip.
