Remember when dialing a phone number was a fun challenge? Over time, we learned all the quirks and tricks of getting the number entered quickly and easily. There was a unique sound each number made when it was dialed, and you could even tell if someone entered the wrong number. We also had to remember the rules of the road and always pull over to dial a zero.

1. The Satisfying Click-Click-Click of Dialing
Do you remember that sound of the line being opened and the dial slowly rotating back to the starting point? For each of us it was the sweet sound of success! As the numbers spun around, we each developed our own rhythm.

2. The Long-Distance Timer
Once you got to attempt to reach someone far away, it was considered a big deal. Dialing long distance numbers was so serious, we even had to set a timer to make our parents happy about not wasting money! Planning our phone dates with grandma or a friend was so much fun. Because we knew we wouldn’t be able to chat for hours on end, we would plan our conversations in detail.
3. The Tangled Cord Dance
The phone cord and the spiral would always end up being so tangled if you were on the phone for a long time. Talking on the phone and wrapping yourself in the cord became the norm. Spiral cords also had that funny way of twisting when you were talking.
4. The Party Line Etiquette
When someone picked up a party line, they listened first to see if they were interrupting another conversation because the time-sharing rule was that there was no talking over each other. Time was split among users and emergency calls always took precedence, so you learned to keep your call short.
5. The Phone Book Workout
The thick phone books were more than just a number look-up. They made great seat boosters and could be used to prop doors open. Searching for a name in the white pages was hell, especially if it was Smith, Johnson, or any other common last name. The yellow pages were our google and taught us the art of alphabetical order.
6. The Finger-Stopping Mistake
Stopping the dial when it was in motion was a common mistake that many of us made and learned really quickly that you had to be patient and committed to dial the full number.
7. The Strategic Location Planning
The placement of the family phone was a huge decision as it had to be in a place where it could be easily accessed but not so private that it would feel weird to have surrounded by other people. This usually resulted in the kitchen or the hallway like a phone booth.
8. The Emergency Number Drill
Mom’s neat penmanship was recognizable on a lot of important phone numbers written on the wall. Most of us learned emergency numbers by heart so we could call them safely with our eyes closed just in case it was necessary. Those lists were usually composed of neighbors, grandparents, and the direct line to the police station.
9. The Static Line Mystery
The weather caused our lines to crackle and our conversations to be muffled. We became skilled at figuring out whether the problem was our phone, their phone, or an issue with the network. The phrase, ”Can you hear me now?” wasn’t only a slogan, rather, it was a frequent question asked during many phone calls during stormy weather.
10. The Busy Signal Blues
That busy signal was a nuisance, but it did tell you that someone was using the phone. The waiting game began. Each of us developed our own theories about their best intervals between calls. Every few minutes, we would redial hoping to catch the phone line free.
11. The Collect Call Code
We had to come up with creative codes for collect calls to avoid billing our parents. We did not want to actually say, “Will you accept a collect call from ‘I-made-it-safely?” This was a clever tactic, but usually our parents figured it out.
12. The Phone Booth Hunt
Working phone booths were like a gold mine when we were away from home. We created our own mental maps of which phone booths worked and always had a handful of coins. The phone books on chains and glass enclosed booths were our own cellular network.
13. The Prank Call Era
Prank calls were a popular activity for the bored kids in the neighborhood before caller ID was a thing. Is your refrigerator running? would be an example of a prank that is still done today. In small towns, the local operator would know who the prank caller was.
14. The Late-Night Whisper
A special kind of stealth was required for late night calls. We would extend the cord as far as possible, looking for an area in the house where our whispers wouldn’t be able to be heard. The challenge was to keep the family from waking up while talking to the person on the other end.
