Before the rise of smoothie bowls and avocado toast, an interesting array of culinary options could be found in breakfast offerings. The breakfast foods that were made on 1960s and 1970s likely seem strange, but they provided fuel for a generation who worked paper routes, did chores, and sat through school. Let’s remember the older classics that have been slowly disappearing from American tables.

1. Tang Breakfast Drink Mix

The orange drink sold as a staple of the American breakfast table also happened to be the space program’s favorite orange drink. Parents loved it because of the vitamin C content, kids loved it because of the connection to space, and everyone pretended the drink actually tasted like orange juice. The bright orange drink would definitely not be accepted as food in today’s natural food movement.

2. Liver and Onions

Especially in rural households, having a breakfast as nutritious and protein packed as this was considered the norm. It was an iron rich meal designed to give farm kids sustenance for their morning chores, which were likely much more labor intensive than most kids’ chores today.

Breakfast ketchup was a thing and it was especially normalized to put it on eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. breakfast ketchup and regular ketchup were literally one bottle. Today’s food culture would be shocked by the breakfast ketchup consumption.
