Coming down skates and serving you in style, these workers were the pinnacle of the drive-in restaurant experience. Wrapping their trays around their wrists so they could free up a hand to serve you an ice cream float, they really knew how to put on a show. Have fun waiting in line at the drive-thru, because those employees will never put on a show like this.

2. The Magical Metal Window Tray
With their ingenious metal trays, these servers transformed cars into dining rooms. Before cup holders were a thing, the trays created a place for garbage and drinks. With the satisfying clank of the tray, dinner has begun.
3. The Intercom Ordering System
There was nothing like ordering your food through the static noise of the drive-in’s speaker system. It felt like ordering cheeseburgers instead of rockets from mission control, and every time the burgers always won.
4. Real Ice Cream Malts in Frosty Metal Cups
The thick malts arrived in large metal cups that would frost over from the cold. Plus, you got the mixing container filled with leftover shake enough to refill your glass twice. The sound of the metal spoon scraping the bottom of the cup for the last sip was music to my ears.
5. The Friday Night Social Scene
Every Friday, the drive-in turned into a teenage hangout. Cars would cruise through showcasing their rides while trying to spot other people. Of course it was fun to grab a bite, but it was also just important to see and be seen, especially if you wanted to talk to that cute person from class.
6. The Perfect First Date Spot
It was a great first date spot. It was low pressure, but enough to make a good impression. Sharing a milkshake with two straws is a bit cliche now, but back then it was a great way to break the ice and talk to someone.
7. The Distinctive Paper-Wrapped Burgers
Each burger was wrapped in wax paper, giving the illusion that it was some kind of gift. The wrapping would keep the burger hot and ready to be devoured at any moment. The first whiff of grilled onions would make your mouth water. There was no wasteful branded wrapping, just good burger wrapping.
8. The Jukebox Selection Panel
Every car would have their own little jukebox where they can play songs for 5 cents. Songs would play from speakers around the lot and would create a nice atmosphere while eating at the parking lot.
9. The Root Beer Float Ritual
Root beer would come from a frosted mug that was so cold that there were ice crystals on the outside. It would come with vanilla ice cream which would cause the foam to rise to the top without spilling. Every waitress knew how to do it perfectly so that it was an art.
10. The Family Car Picnic
It was a special occasion to eat food in the car. Everyone in the family would have to balance their burger and fry with no spills in the car. It was a fine dining experience decades before anyone else called it that.
11. The Hot Rod Showcase
The drive-in showed off your car and engine to all. Everyone would polish their cars and would even rev their engines as people looked on. It was the perfect balance of car shows and dinner theaters.
12. The After-Game Tradition
No matter the outcome of the game, the drive-in was always the post-game destination. Football players still wore their jerseys, cheerleaders still wore their uniforms, and fans came dressed in the school colors. Everyone packed the lot. The whole town came, and the drive-in stayed open late for the burgers and shakes, which meant game night was always busy. People came to celebrate or commiserate.
