1. Riding in the Back of Pickup Trucks
Nothing beat the thrill of bouncing around in the back of Dad’s pickup truck, wind whipping through our hair as we headed to the grocery store or even on longer trips. We’d sit on the wheel wells or lean against the cab, sometimes even standing up to feel like we were flying. Today, this would result in immediate calls to child protective services and serious legal consequences for the parents.

2. Sending Kids to Buy Cigarettes
It was perfectly normal for parents to send their kids to the corner store with a note and some change to pick up a pack of cigarettes. Store owners didn’t think twice about it – we just ran errands for our folks. These days, selling tobacco products to minors is a serious offense that can result in heavy fines and even jail time.
3. Leaving Babies in Cars While Shopping
Parents would regularly leave sleeping babies in the car while they ran into stores for “just a minute.” Windows would be cracked open, and nobody gave it a second thought. Today, this practice is illegal and can result in criminal charges and the immediate involvement of child protective services.
4. Kids Playing Unsupervised Until Dark
We’d roam neighborhoods freely, build forts in vacant lots, and explore wherever our bikes could take us. Modern parents who allow their children this kind of freedom risk being charged with negligent supervision or endangering the welfare of a child.
5. No Car Seats or Seat Belts
Babies rode in Mom’s lap or simple metal car seats without safety features. Older kids bounced around freely in the station wagon’s back seat or cargo area. Failing to secure a child in an appropriate car seat can result in hefty fines and even child endangerment charges.
6. Physical Discipline in Public
Spanking or physically disciplining children in public was a common sight in the ’60s. Nobody batted an eye if a parent gave their kid a swat in the grocery store for misbehaving. Today, physical discipline in public can result in assault charges and immediate intervention by authorities.
7. Drinking from Garden Hoses
On hot summer days, we’d drink straight from the garden hose without a second thought. Parents encouraged it as a way to keep us hydrated while playing outside. Now, with our knowledge of lead, bacteria, and other contaminants in hose water, allowing children to drink from hoses could be considered negligent.
8. Babies Sleeping on Their Stomachs
Parents were actually advised to place babies on their stomachs to sleep, often with soft blankets and pillows in the crib. Today, this practice is considered so dangerous that daycares can lose their licenses for allowing it, and parents can face neglect charges if they persistently ignore safe sleep guidelines.
9. Kids Working Manual Jobs
Many of us started working very young – helping on farms, delivering papers, or working in family businesses. Children as young as 10 would operate machinery or handle potentially dangerous tools. Modern child labor laws would make most of these practices illegal, with serious consequences for parents and employers.
10. Hitchhiking as a Normal Activity
Parents didn’t think twice about letting their teenagers hitchhike to get around town or even to neighboring cities. It was a common way for kids to get to school events or visit friends when family cars weren’t available. Today, allowing your child to hitchhike would likely result in endangerment charges and serious legal consequences.
11. Lead Paint and Asbestos Exposure
Kids would help paint rooms and renovate houses without any protective gear, exposed to lead paint and asbestos materials. We’d even play with paint chips and dust from construction. Now, knowingly exposing children to these hazards could result in criminal charges and immediate removal of children from the home.
12. Sharing Prescription Medications
Parents would regularly share antibiotics and other prescription medications between siblings or even neighbor kids. If one child had leftover medicine, it was common to save it for the next time someone got sick. Today, sharing prescription medications with children is a serious offense that could result in drug charges and loss of custody.
13. Homemade Baby Formula
Mothers would make their own baby formula using evaporated milk, water, and Karo syrup, following recipes passed down from their own mothers or recommended by doctors. Some even added beer to help babies sleep! Today, feeding babies homemade formula could result in neglect charges and immediate medical intervention.
14. Swimming Pools Without Fences
Backyard pools often had no fencing or safety barriers, and kids were expected to learn to swim or stay away. Many families had above-ground pools with removable ladders as their only safety measure. Modern pool safety laws would make these practices illegal, with homeowners facing serious liability and potential criminal charges.
