Due to the increased emphasis on standardized testing, schools have moved to a curriculum that focuses on technology and software skills while disregarding many of the practical skills that used to be taught at schools. While literacy and numeracy remain important, there are many skills that will be important in a student’s adult life that used to be taught and are no longer included. 1. Basic Home Economics
Home economics taught children how to run a house. This included teaching children how to budget and plan meals, understand nutrition, and comparison shop. These skills are important in making homes more self-sufficient and healthier.

2. Shop Class
In addition to construction and metalwork, wood and metal shops also taught practical problem solving and tool safety, as well as the use of tools for basic repairs around the house. These classes were also hands on and so were good for teaching skilled trades.
3. Personal Finance
Part of the skill set of every trained teacher was knowledge of finance, credit, taxes, and investing. Teachers also showed students how to keep a checkbook, how to balance it, how to calculate interest, and how to make sound financial decisions. While this is necessary for a child growing up, it is even more important in today’s world.

Cursive has a use beyond signatures. It is also a skill that improves motor control and reading, especially when it comes to old documents. Research has shown that it improves memory retention and overall cognitive ability. Without this skill, students will be cut off from many historical records, including those that are personally connected.
5. Basic Car Maintenance
Knowing how to change a tire or check different fluids in your car’s engine and being able to know what each blinking light means is important. It saves you money from having to call a tow truck or car repair service just to get them to look at it. A little knowledge about car maintenance can help you avoid big repair bills.
6. Critical Thinking
Courses that involved logic and reasoning were designed so that students could learn how to analyze different types of information, identify common reasoning errors, and formulate rational arguments. With all the information people are exposed to daily, being able to think logically about what information is true or false is an invaluable skill. From a young age students were trained to think critically, examine a claim, and use evidence to reach a conclusion.
7. Home Maintenance
Pupils were once taught the basics of electrical work, plumbing, and repairs around the home. Learning how to stop a leaky faucet and understanding how to operate circuit breakers is something that came in handy for self-sufficiency, personal empowerment, and of course, savings when owning a house.
8. Time Management
Lessons preparing students for adult life were lesson plans that centered around effective planning, prioritizing, and time management. Teaching these skills is even more necessary today than it has ever been before. Students were taught how to effectively juggle many competing demands.
9. Public Speaking
Speech classes helped students build their self-confidence, and develop the communication skills they needed in order to be successful in their jobs. Juggling a few main ideas, being able to articulate a clear message, and overcoming the fear of public speaking are skills that are vital in both your personal and work life.
10. First Aid
As part of the regular school curriculum, teaching basic first-aid and emergency response is an idea that is long overdue. Being able to perform CPR, treat wounds, and manage everyday emergencies really can be the differentiating factor in a life or death situation.
11. Typing
In today’s world, almost all students are using a keyboard on a daily basis. However, the majority of them do not know about the significant impact that typing lessons can have on their productivity, their risk of developing repetitive strain injuries, and their overall efficiency
12. Civics
It used to be a necessity to understand how the government works, what the rights of citizens are, and what the duties of citizens entail. Students were taught about the local government system and how important it was to participate in it. This information is crucial to becoming an educated citizen.
13. Research Skills
Finding and evaluating sources and conducting thorough examinations are typical methodologies stemming from traditional research. These competencies hold even greater significance within the information saturating digital era. Systematic information acquisition and verification remain central to student learning.
14. Social Etiquette
Basic social abilities and courtesy once formed part of the core curriculum in education. Professionalism, conversational competency, and situational appropriateness constituted behavioral pedagogy. These social skills are vital within personal and professional realms.
