Everyday Childhood Things That Would Baffle Kids Today

Growing up in the 1960s and ’70s was like living in a different world compared to today. As I watch my grandkids navigate their high-tech lives, I can’t help but chuckle thinking about all the everyday things from our childhood that would seem like ancient artifacts to them. Let’s take a nostalgic trip back to those simpler times and remember some of the objects and experiences that shaped our youth.

1. Slide Rules and Long Division

Before calculators became affordable and widespread, we had to master the art of the slide rule and show our long division work on paper. These wooden or plastic calculating devices were mandatory in math class and engineering courses. Try explaining to kids today that we couldn’t just ask Siri for the answer or pull out our phones to multiply large numbers. The careful alignment of decimal points and the satisfaction of solving complex calculations by hand were just part of daily life.

2. TV Antenna Adjustments

Before cable and streaming, watching TV was a family sport. Someone had to stand by the rabbit ears, adjusting them just right while everyone else shouted “Better!” or “Worse!” from the couch. The tin foil-wrapped antenna tips and the constant fine-tuning to catch your favorite show through the static would seem like science fiction to today’s kids, who expect crystal-clear pictures at the touch of a button.

3. Carbon Paper

Before photocopiers and printers became household items, carbon paper was our version of “copy and paste.” This magical blue or black sheet could make instant copies of whatever you typed or wrote, though you had to press hard enough to make multiple copies readable. Try explaining to kids today why we called the CC in email “carbon copy” – they’d look at you like you were speaking a foreign language.

4. Library Card Catalogs

Before Google, finding a book meant navigating through tiny wooden drawers filled with alphabetized cards. You had to understand the Dewey Decimal System and have the patience to flip through hundreds of cards to find what you needed. The smell of those wooden drawers and the satisfaction of finding the right card is something today’s digital natives will never experience.

5. Drive-In Movie Theaters

Watching movies from your car was the height of entertainment in our day. You’d hook that clunky metal speaker to your car window, load up on popcorn from the concession stand, and settle in for a double feature. The tinny sound quality and occasional rain showers were just part of the charm – try explaining that to kids who expect surround sound and reclining seats!

6. Record Players

The careful ritual of pulling a vinyl record from its sleeve, placing it on the turntable, and gently lowering the needle would mystify today’s kids who simply say “Hey Alexa, play music.” The occasional skips and scratches were just part of the experience, and don’t even get me started on having to flip the record over halfway through an album!

7. Phone Booths

Those glass-enclosed havens of privacy on street corners were our version of mobile phones. You had to have a pocket full of change ready for emergency calls, and sometimes wait in line to use one. Superman’s quick-change routine would make no sense to kids today – where would he find a phone booth to change in?

8. Manual Car Windows

Remember that hand crank that controlled your car windows? Kids today would be baffled by the workout we got just trying to let in some fresh air. The universal “roll down your window” hand signal to other drivers would be completely lost on the younger generation, who’ve only known the luxury of power windows.

9. Film Cameras and Flash Cubes

The anticipation of waiting days or weeks to see how your photos turned out is something today’s instant-gratification generation would never understand. Those disposable flash cubes that gave you just four shots, the careful winding of film, and the disappointment of finding out weeks later that you had your finger over the lens – these were all part of the photography experience.

10. Encyclopedia Sets

Those massive sets of encyclopedias that took up an entire bookshelf were our version of Wikipedia. Door-to-door salesmen would convince our parents that these expensive books were the key to our education. The annual yearbook updates were exciting arrivals, though by the time they reached us, much of the information was already outdated.

11. Typewriters and White-Out

The clickety-clack symphony of a typewriter would sound like ancient machinery to modern kids. Making a mistake meant either starting over or dabbing on White-Out and waiting for it to dry. The satisfying ‘ding’ at the end of each line and the manual carriage return were all part of the writing process. And don’t get me started on having to change those messy ribbon cartridges!

12. 8-Track Tapes

Before cassettes and CDs, we had these clunky cartridges that would sometimes switch tracks right in the middle of a song. The sound of that distinctive ‘ka-chunk’ as it changed tracks was part of the listening experience. Try explaining to kids today why we couldn’t just skip to our favorite song or why we had to stick a matchbook under the tape to get it to play right!

13. TV Channel Knobs

Before remote controls, we had to physically get up and turn a chunky knob to change between the handful of channels available. The UHF dial was even more finicky, requiring careful tuning to get a watchable picture. Kids today, with their hundreds of channels and streaming services, would be mystified by the concept of being the family’s designated “channel changer.”

14. Metal Lawn Darts

These dangerous backyard missiles were actually considered a children’s game in our day! Throwing weighted metal darts with sharp points into the air and hoping they landed in a plastic ring instead of someone’s head was somehow considered acceptable family fun. Try explaining that to today’s safety-conscious parents – they’d think we were pulling their leg!
