Feeling like some 1980s nostalgia?

1980s movies are full of bright colors, musical montages, big hair and flashy fashion, and references that shaped pop culture for decades to come. If you’re looking for a nostalgic movie night, we’ve got you covered. Our list of 4 options for your upcoming movie night is not about listing the most popular movies of the 80s, or even the best movies from the decade.

Instead, they are fun, nostalgia-filled flicks that will take you back to a different era. Whether you’re someone who was alive in the 80s or you’re someone who just loves the era’s fashion and cultural impact, here are 4 movies to check out for your 1980s Movie Night.

We’ve got a family movie (Flight of the Navigator), a college comedy (Real Genius), a sci-fi classic (Tron), and a romantic comedy (Splash). Whatever you’re looking for in an 80s movie night–or even better, an 80s movie marathon–this list should cover it!

Flight of the Navigator (1986)

Flight of the Navigator combines science fiction and adventure in a heartwarming story of a young boy who mysteriously disappears for eight years, only to return with no memory of what happened–and at the exact same age when he disappeared.

This family-friendly film takes audiences on a thrilling ride as the boy navigates a futuristic spacecraft and befriends an endearing extraterrestrial creature. The movie features a young Sarah Jessica Parker and a voice performance from Paul Reubens. (Pee-Wee’s Playhouse premiered the same year as Flight of the Navigator).

Real Genius (1985)

Next up is Real Genius, a cult classic about a group of college students who get recruited to work on a high-tech laser project, only to learn that their work is going to be weaponized. The movie is full of witty dialogue and eccentric characters–as well as some great pranks as roommate characters played by Gabriel Jarrett and Val Kilmer try to undermine their rivals.

Tron (1982)

Tron was a groundbreaking movie about virtual reality and science fiction. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is a computer programmer who gets sucked into a digital universe where he has to compete in a series of games with stakes as high as life and death. Tron is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, evidenced by the new Tron: Lightcycle ride at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. A sequel in 2010 (Tron: Legacy) and an upcoming third Tron movie.

Splash (1984)

The 80s had a lot of great romantic comedies, so we definitely want to include one on this list!

Splash was an endearing romantic comedy about a gorgeous mermaid and the man who falls in love with her after she saves him from drowning. The movie stars Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, as well as John Candy and Eugene Levy. Splash has stood the test of time, with a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. A remake is in the works, so it’s the perfect time to revisit the original.
