Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

With news pointing towards the existence of aliens, it’s time to determine how much humans stand a chance. With their advanced tech and inhuman capabilities, there’s no question that aliens have the advantage. Check out these sci-fi movies where aliens came out as the winners.

Spoiler warning!

1. Life (2017)

The idea of an alien slowly taking over your body in order to spread is terrifying. And it’s exactly what occurs in Life. The alien in this film is an intelligent carbon-based creature that feeds on humans and grows as a result.

Although the heroes of the movie try to keep themselves contained to keep it from spreading, the alien ends up on Earth. The movie ends with fishermen rescuing the pod that crash-landed and unknowingly unleashing the alien on the world.

2. Cloverfield (2008)

One of the scariest alien films during the late 2000s was Cloverfield. The movie used a “found footage” style which put the audience directly into the plot.

In the end, the protagonists end up taking cover under a bridge as the military shoots down the alien. They end up dying as the bridge collapses on them, and the fate of the alien isn’t entirely known. At least not until you hear it at the end of the credits.

It takes more than military strikes to take down that alien.

3. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

There’s no question that The Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a horror classic. Its ending is also downright terrifying. Donald Sutherland plays the lead who is trying to escape the aliens. They’re replacing humans with emotionless duplicates.

As Sutherland makes it to San Francisco to warn them of the aliens, he realizes that he’s too late. The entire city has fallen to them, and he’s the only remaining human.

It makes the viewer wonder if was he also the only remaining human on Earth.

4. The Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

With all the CGI and characters, it’s easy to forget that the big baddie in The Avengers films is actually an alien. Thanos is from the planet Titan and leads several other aliens to attack Earth. His goal is to wipe out half of Earth’s population.

Although the Avengers valiantly try to thwart him, the film ends with Thanos being successful. Audience members watched as many of their favorite superheroes and characters collapsed into black mist.

Although the superhero crew would eventually turn the tide in The Avengers: Endgame (2019), initially, the aliens won.

5. The Thing (1982)

Another terrifying horror story is The Thing. In this film, a crew isolated in Antarctica end up exposing themselves to an alien they found buried deep in the earth. This alien has the unique ability of morphing and taking control or assimilating another being.

The movie preys on paranoia and audience members never know whether the character they’re looking at is human or the alien.

At the end of the film, two men end up sitting in the freezing station with the intention of dying to ensure the alien doesn’t escape. The kicker is that neither knows if the other is the alien and neither does the audience.

The movie ends there, and it’s unknown whether one of them escaped as the alien.

6. The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)

One of the best films to come out as a result of The Cold War is The Day The Earth Stood Still. It’s a great movie that shows the fear and tension of the time without making it about the US and USSR.

Instead, aliens come to Earth and threaten everyone with destruction if they don’t start behaving. They’re particularly worried about the devastating weapons the different countries are producing.

The power and fear the aliens possess convince those on Earth to do their bidding. It’s a bit more of a relaxed takeover, but a complete one all the same.

7. Skyline (2010)

A completely understandable reason why we might fear aliens is because of their power and technology. Both power and technology are at the forefront of Skyline. In this movie, it’s revealed that aliens are abducting people.

Governments across the world try to stop them. They even stoop to nuclear strikes. However, the aliens remain alive and continue to take over the world with humans resigning to their fates.

8. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

This movie shows another alien victory although it isn’t achieved through violence. Upon discovering aliens, Roy, played by Richard Dreyfuss, ends up becoming obsessed with communicating with them.

The film ends with the aliens returning everyone they have ever abducted, but there’s a catch. They want Roy in return. Roy ends up abandoning his family and leaving with the aliens, giving them exactly what they wanted.

9. Battlefield Earth (2000)

Another unique alien win comes in Battlefield Earth. There’s a chance for humans to take back their planet, but the hero of the film ends up negotiating with the aliens instead. Human slavery ends, but they still have to work in the mines.

Since this is exactly what the aliens want anyway, it’s no skin off their backs to accept these terms. If anything, it makes the alien leader look great since he brokered peace between the aliens and humans.

10. District 9 (2009)

There’s no question that District 9 is a statement about class inequality in the world. In the movie, it’s an alien species that lives in a poor district. Humans are first-class citizens.

The movie follows an alien named Christopher and his son, C.J., who attempt to leave Earth to return to their home planet. They’re ultimately successful and intend on bringing back more ships to save their people.

This alien victory offers a message of hope rather than annihilation.
