Written By William Butterworth

Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

Uncover the 10 movie adaptations that failed to do their books justice. Save yourself from the letdown and discover which films to sidestep. Trust us, just read the book instead.

Ender’s Game (2013)

Ender’s Game is a beloved book, and this movie adaptation did it few favors. One of the most crucial relationships in the book is Ender’s relationship with his brother. You would hardly have even known he has a brother in the movie. The film also didn’t follow the plot well and became more of a buddy flick than anything else.

World War Z (2013)

There have been quite a few films that have attempted to use World War Z as its source material. The film that came out in 2013 does a terrible job of adapting it. In fact, the lore they used is so original and different that it’s almost like the writers and producers just borrowed the title to get fans to show up to the film.

It’s an entirely different thing from the book.

Eragon (2006)

Talk to any fan of the Eragon book series, and they’ll tell you how much the film both angered and aggrieved them. From changing important plot points that matter in later books to changing the core features of the characters, it was a mess from start to finish.

Artemis Fowl (2020)

With a successful book series like Artemis Fowl, the recipe for success is already done. Unfortunately, this adaptation decided to go a different route.

It changed the main character for the worst and relied heavily on phony CGI for characters that didn’t even exist in the series.

The Shining (1980)

While there’s no doubt that The Shining is a great movie on its own, as a book adaptation, it’s terrible. There are so many changes that even Stephen King had problems with it. Jack Torrance, for one, actually tries to fight the madness of the hotel and sacrifices himself to save his family.

There’s also a lot more focus on Danny’s abilities.

The Dark Tower (2017)

Stephen King’s books are remarkable, but their movie adaptations tend to miss the mark. Such is the case with The Dark Tower. With a series filled with incredible lore and interesting characters, the movie borrowed some names and then invented a brand new story. It’s definitely one to skip.

My Sister’s Keeper (2009)

My Sister’s Keeper is an interesting and heart-wrenching story of a young daughter who discovers that her parents have basically been using her to keep their older daughter alive. From body parts to other medical procedures, nothing is spared to keep their older daughter from succumbing to leukemia.

The movie does a decent job of adapting the book up until the end. It features a completely different ending that ruins the point of the entire book.

Timeline (2003)

Michael Crichton is responsible for making some of the most popular books-turned-movies in the past few decades. One film that ended up being a flop was Timeline. The writers and producers ended up changing the plot so much that Crichton became wary of licensing his books again in the future.

I Am Legend (2007)

Having watched I Am Legend, most people wouldn’t know that it wasn’t a story about zombies. In the book, it’s actually a species of vampire. There are feral vampires and those that can control themselves.

The main character goes on a killing spree and actually ends up hung by the sentient vampires for killing their kind.

Ready Player One (2018)

Fans of Ready Player One are passionate. So, when the movie came out, you can be sure there was disappointment. The film ended up dumbing down some major plot points and even changed some of the book’s beloved references to appeal to a general audience.
