She studied Film and Television many years ago at university and uses her knowledge to dissect the newest releases. When not in front of a laptop, she wanders around various European cities with a backpack and a little dog.

The Australian A-Lister needs no introduction. She’s stunning, talented and her newest sure-to-be hit blockbuster Barbie is coming out in less than a week. Since her breakthrough role in 2013’s crime drama The Wolf of Wall Street, Robbie earned an Oscar nomination and took on an array of roles showing off her impressive range.

While Barbie promises to be her best and most prominent role so far, Margot Robbie’s portfolio extends far beyond the big-budget mainstream. Here are 10 lesser-known but excellent films featuring a Margot Robbie performance.

Dreamland (2019)

This gripping American period thriller was directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, and features Margot Robbie alongside Finn Cole, Travis Fimmel, and Garrett Hedlund. After premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, the movie had a limited release in November 2020. While the critics weren’t exactly impressed, Robbie’s performance was almost universally praised.

The Big Short (2015)

While Margot Robbie doesn’t star in this feature (she features in a small cameo playing herself), the film is still one of 2015’s most underrated titles. The Big Short is set during the 2005 U.S. mortgage housing crisis. Christian Bale plays an eccentric hedge fund manager who predicts a housing market crash and bets against it. Ryan Gosling stars as an investor who uses the financial crisis for gain, and Steve Carell plays a disillusioned idealist. As they navigate the financial industry, their assumptions are challenged, leading to unforeseen consequences.

Z For Zachariah (2015)

A thought-provoking apocalyptic sci-fi film directed by Craig Zobel, Z For Zachariah is based on the best-selling novel by Robert C. O’Brien. Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Chris Pine feature as the three remaining survivors of a nuclear holocaust. The film explores a unique love triangle amidst a decimated world. Robbie’s standout performance drew critical acclaim and a warm reception from audiences.

Bombshell (2019)

Despite the explosive subject matter and the true story behind it, Bombshell somewhat flew under the radar. This compelling film tells the story of three intelligent, driven women who rose to prominence as anchors at a well-known news network. But their lives take a dramatic turn when they start making headlines by defying the very man who propelled their fame.

Focus’ (2015)

This highly entertaining crime comedy drama directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, stars Will Smith alongside Margot Robbie. The film revolves around a seasoned con artist who mentors a budding femme fatale, Jess. As their relationship intertwines with deception and love, they part ways, only to reunite three years later, leading to a tangled web of intrigue and complications. Despite mixed reviews, the film was a box office success, grossing $158 million against its $50 million budget.

About Time (2013)

Critical response for About Time was mixed, at best. But this is still an endearing romantic comedy worth a watch on a rainy day. Domhnall Gleeson stars as a man who discovers he can travel through time. Determined to improve his life, he seeks love and finds it in Mary (Rachel McAdams). As he uses his ability to fix various life events, he soon learns that time travel has its limitations and cannot shield him from the challenges and joys of family life.

Terminal (2018)

Written and directed by Vaughn Stein, this neo-noir thriller features Margot Robbie and an ensemble cast including Simon Pegg, Max Irons, and Mike Myers. The film weaves a dark tale of intertwining lives involving assassins, a terminally ill teacher, a custodian, and a waitress; all caught up in a deadly plot. While critics weren’t keen on the plot or the direction, they couldn’t fault Robbie’s performance.

I.C.U. (2009)

I.C.U. is not the best thriller out there, to put it mildly. And its low IMDB score of 2.5 shows the flick has very few fans. However, it is among Robbie’s earliest works and worth watching for that alone. The film follows three people who inadvertently become the target of a relentless serial killer.

Amsterdam (2022)

This suspenseful period mystery comedy stars Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington. The movie follows a doctor, a nurse, and a lawyer who reunite to unravel a political conspiracy after the murder of a retired U.S. general. Despite mixed reviews, the film offers an ambitious exploration of the 1933 Business Plot and a stellar cast.

I, Tonya (2017)

I, Tonya is a darkly comedic and mockumentary-style biographical film about the life of figure skater Tonya Harding and her connection to the infamous 1994 assault on rival Nancy Kerrigan. Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Margot Robbie as Harding, the movie challenges viewers to make up their minds from contradictory interviews with Harding and her ex-husband.
