Can You Recognize These 10 Directors Based on Their Styles?

Written By William Butterworth

Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

If it only takes you a scene to recognize the director of the film you’re watching, then that director has a particular style. Even infrequent movie watchers can likely pick out some of the directors in this list based on a few scenes. Take a look at the directors whose style is immediately recognizable in their films.

Stephen Spielberg

Stephen Spielberg is an iconic director, but he’s also fairly easy to identify in a line-up of random movies. Just look for the movie with a score by John Williams. He also uses some of his favorite actors over and over, like Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, and Tom Hanks.

Spielberg also likes to experiment with different compositions and shots. Look for great writing, and you’ll spot his movies.

Quentin Tarantino

In most of Tarantino’s films, you can spot the absurd and violent. The director loves gore and explosive blood. If you still can’t figure out which films belong to him, then just look for the feet shot.

He always seems to include at least one shot of feet in his films.

Martin Scorsese

If the movie is about crime or the mafia, then there’s a good chance it’s a Martin Scorsese film. While Scorsese does branch out now and then to other genres, the mafia tends to be his bread and butter.

He’s also a fan of working with the same actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Victor Argo.

If you’re watching a movie where guilt, violence, and profanity are key themes, then you’re probably watching a Scorsese film.

Christopher Nolan

Nolan is a grandmaster of a director, but it can be pretty easy to spot his films, too. Just look for extremely complicated plots. Even his Batman films have in-depth plots that are grittier and more realistic than most superhero films.

Along with his complex plots, Nolan often uses the same type of lighting in his films. He prefers documentary-style lighting to add realism to his scenes.

Confused about what’s happening? You’re probably watching a Nolan film.

J.J. Abrams

Whether you love him or hate him after what he did to Star Trek and Star Wars, there’s no question that J.J. Abrams has a signature style.

Just look for a lens flare. He loves using lens flares in his films. His writing can sometimes be a bit lazy, too, if we’re being honest. Granted, this is because he usually directs for series and not standalone films.

You can also tell you’re watching a J.J. Abrams film by looking for fluid camera movements.

Alfred Hitchcock

Another famous director with a distinct style is Alfred Hitchcock. One of the easiest ways to spot his films is to look for him in the movie. Hitchcock was notorious for making cameos in his own films.

He also had a tendency to cast blond women with blue eyes in lead or supportive roles. If the movie is a horror or a thriller, then it could be a Hitchcock film.

Wes Anderson

Even if you’ve never watched a Wes Anderson film, you’d likely be able to pick his film out from others. Anderson is notorious for using unnatural colors in his films. Whether it’s lavenders, oranges, or deep reds, there’s a certain Anderson aesthetic that’s immediately recognizable.

Anderson also likes to work with the same actors like Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman.

Michael Bay

Look for explosions and high action. That’s really it.

Stanley Kubrick

A slight challenge for moviegoers out there might be identifying a Kubrick film. There are some tell-tale signs that can help. Kubrick had a reputation for pushing his actors to their limits. If there’s a lot of emotion on screen, then it could be a Kubrick film.

He’s also best known for the one-point perspective shot, where everything focuses on a single point in the screen. One example is the shot of the hallway in The Shining.

James Cameron

Cameron may like to take his sweet time making movies, but you can usually recognize them when they do release. James Cameron places a particular focus on film technology.

He’ll even invent new pieces of tech just to get certain shots. Cameron also goes deep in detail when it comes to lore and plot.
