Since Oppenheimer’s premiere this week, Irish actor Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders) has been getting a lot of praise and attention for his performance. As far as some critics are concerned, the 47-year-old actor may have just won his first Oscar.

But not everything Murphy touches turns to gold (or critically acclaimed mushroom clouds). Here are some of the least impressive movies the actor appeared in.

1. Watching the Detectives (2007)

This straight-to-DVD romantic comedy failed to impress audiences or the critics. It seems it lacks hilarious moments, and the chemistry between the two leads is all but non-existent.

2. Red Lights (2012)

Despite having an all-star ensemble cast, Red Lights disappointed due to the highly predictable plot and terrible dialogue. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie just about scored a measly 30%.

3. Perrier’s Bounty (2009)

While Perrier’s Bounty is not a bad film per se, most comedic moments seem to fall flat. When the movie first premiered, it received a rather cold reception from critics and fans alike. On a positive note, we do get to watch Murphy speak in his native Irish accent.

4. Retreat (2011)

Retreat starring Murphy alongside Thandiwe Newton (Westword), isn’t the worst low-budget horror film. Its premise is also eerily prophetic considering how 2020 brought to life the plight of these characters (minus the madman). While the response to the movie was mixed, horror fans seem to enjoy it.

5. In Time (2011)

In Time was supposed to be popstar Justin Timberlake’s big break into the action movie genre. Instead, the film flopped. However, Cillian Murphy does give a credible performance as the main villain.

6. The Edge of Love (2008)

Based on a book by David N. Thomas, The Edge of Love was praised for its performance by co-stars Cillian Murphy and Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game). Unfortunately, a talented cast couldn’t save the nonsensical narrative.

7. Aloft (2014)

This Spanish drama was screened at various European film festivals in 2014. Despite having a talented cast, critics didn’t like the story or the writing, earning it a devastating score of 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Spanish critics appreciated the film.

8. Transcendence (2014)

The Johnny Depp-led sci-fi thriller was probably the biggest box office bomb in 2014. It only earned $100 million against a budget of $150 million. Making matters worse, the film was mercilessly panned by critics.

9. Anna (2019)

Anna is a movie about a beautiful professional assassin released a year after Red Sparrow, another movie about a beautiful professional assassin. Unsurprisingly, no one was impressed with the blatant copycat.

10. TRON: Legacy (2010)

While visually stunning, the sequel to the cult-classic Tron failed to impress fans or attract many new viewers to the franchise. A third movie has been in the works for the past 13 years, but it’s unclear if or when the project will happen.
