As the streaming wars continue, platforms are scrambling to adapt to the constantly changing Hollywood landscape. During lockdown when cinemas were closed, studios and streaming companies greenlit dozens of original projects to release directly on streaming platforms. However, as studios look to keep cinemas alive and financially recover from the last three years, it appears that original content on streaming platforms is being cast aside.

The latest platform to announce that it will be pulling original content from its streaming library is Disney+. During the company’s post-earnings call, CFO Christine McCarthy said:

“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation. As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms.”

Disney has not yet confirmed which content will be culled from its direct-to-consumer platform. McCarthy also confirmed that Disney will be producing less original content for Disney+ moving forward, in a move the company is calling a “strategic shift.”

Disney+ has recently canceled future seasons of its original series Willow and National Treasure after a single season of each.

Disney’s president said in a separate statement that the company will be “getting much more surgical about what we make,” as he believes their current slate of programming doesn’t meet the needs or wants of consumers.
