At 67, Tom Hanks is one of the most revered and celebrated actors currently in Holywood. During his past four decades in the film industry, he appeared in countless productions across several genres. From romantic comedies like Sleepless in Seattle to war films like Saving Private Ryan to iconic dramas like Forrest Gump; he’s done it all. And not all of them are good.Â
Considering the actor’s impressive body of work, having the occasional flop is not exactly a surprise. Some of the films on this list were panned by critics from the moment they premiered, while others are just bad.
These are Tom Hanks’s least impressive flicks.Â
1. The Terminal’ (2004)
Loosely based on the real-life case of a man who spent 18 years living in an airport, The Terminal was directed by Steven Spielberg, and stars Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Stanley Tucci. But despite all the star power behind it, the film failed to hit the mark and it received a lukewarm reception, at best.Â
2. Cloud Atlas (2012)
The epic sci-fi movie follows multiple characters across multiple timelines all dealing with multiple problems. Yet, the result was little more than a confusing mess most fans felt underwhelmed by.Â
3. The Circle (2017)
The 2017 techno-thriller had a promising premise. It stars Emma Watson as an intern at an up-and-coming social media company releasing some world-changing dystopian features. The film itself is borderline unwatchable and the critics were less than thrilled.Â
4. Pinocchio (2022)
In all fairness, Tom Hank’s performance was among the few things praised about this version of Pinocchio. Nevertheless, this film was as well-received as most other live-action Disney remakes.Â
5. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011)
Based on a bestselling book by Jonathan Safran Foer, the drama film was actually nominated for two Oscars in 2011. It seems critics didn’t get the memo, as the feature only boasts a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.Â
6. The Da Vinci Code (and its sequels)
Dan Brown’s namesake book was a huge success. So, in theory, an adaptation starring Tom Hanks was supposed to be a massive hit. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Yet, it didn’t stop Hollywood from making two sequels.Â
7. Larry Crowne (2011)
Larry Crowne features Hanks as an unemployed veteran heading to community college, where he meets some interesting people and finds love with a fellow student played by Julia Roberts. While the on-screen chemistry between the two leads and their talent is undeniable, the movie was considered a dull and formulaic effort.Â
8. Bachelor Party (1984)
One of Hanks’s earlier roles, Bachelor Party is the type of raunchy comedy they stopped making back in the 80s. While a bit dated and not exactly peak cinematic, it’s still fun to watch.Â
9. Polar Express (2004)
Despite a relatively lukewarm response from critics, Polar Express is a stunningly animated stop-motion movie. It even won a Grammy for its soundtrack.Â
10. The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990)
This raunchy black comedy is by far the biggest box office bomb to make this list and the worst film to feature a performance from Tom Hanks. It earned around a third of its budget back and currently holds an approval rating of just 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.Â
