MCU’s The Flash premiered three weeks ago, and it’s the worst-performing superhero movie to hit the big screens.

While the caked-in-controversy Ezra Miller-led blockbuster is the most recent disaster in the genre, it’s most certainly not alone. Some superhero movies should’ve just stayed in their secret hide-outs.

Max Steel (2016)

This superhero feature based on the namesake Mattel action figure was universally hated by those who watched it. It is, in fact, the only title on this list with a disastrous score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Suicide Squad (2016)

While Suicide Squad did pretty well at the box office, and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn rendition became the 2016’s most popular cosplay; critics were not impressed. Less than a third of reviewers had any praise for the film and those who criticized it… well, let’s just say they weren’t holding back.

Fantastic Four (2015)

Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four didn’t just fail to impress; many class it as the worst flick to come out in 2015, and it has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes rating out of all the Marvel Comics-inspired movies. Funnily enough, a film about the same team of heroes released a decade prior was also poorly received. Maybe the MCU will get this right, or maybe the Fantastic Four are cursed.

Catwoman (2004)

With a star like the Oscar-winning Halle Berry, it’s hard to understand how Catwoman was such a failure. That is until you watch the movie. The film was so bad it won no less than four Golden Rasberry Awards ( the parody accolades given to the year’s cinematic disasters).

The Spirit (2008)

The Spirit has an interesting premise going for it. And that’s about it. Moviegoers didn’t get it, and the critics destroyed it. Such was the failure that it barely recovered half of its budget at the Box Office.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

This steampunk superhero thriller about 19th-century literary characters coming together is the perfect example of a movie loved by viewers and hated by critics. While the film did extraordinarily well financially, on Rotten Tomatoes, it got a less impressive score of 17%.

The Punisher (2004)

Based on the vigilante comics of the same name, The Punisher follows a man set to avenge the slaying of his family. It wasn’t quite as critically panned as others on this list, but many hated how dark and gloomy the film was compared to the more witty comic book series.

RoboCop 2 (1990)

Given the success of the first RoboCop movie in 1987, a sequel was sure to happen. The actual movie received a mixed response, and it wasn’t as innovative as the original. It did, however, somehow predict the city of Detroit’s 2013 bankruptcy more than two decades before it happened.

Batman & Robin (1997)

When Batman & Robin premiered in 1997, it impressed no one. Even George Clooney as the billionaire vigilante couldn’t save this one. Financially, the feature was such a disappointment that any subsequent sequels were canceled.

Elektra (2005)

This female-led Daredevil spin-off was so bad that even its lead actress hated it. Jennifer Garner explained in several interviews that she only worked on the project because of contractual obligations.
