The Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) led Secret Invasion is in full swing on Disney+, but the response from audiences and critics was mixed. While audiences are less than impressed with the use of AI in the opening sequence, critics find the spy thriller angle a bit on the tired side.

Considering how much content the MCU puts out every year, it’s not surprising that some series do better than others. While shows such as 2022’s Ms. Marvel and 2021’s WandaVision were universally acclaimed, other series were either reviled or mostly ignored.

Here are the 10 worst-received series to ever come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Inhumans (2017)

With a 4.9 IMDB score and a shocking rating of 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say that very few Marvel fans, if any, liked Inhumans. The show originally premiered on the big screen, in IMAX no less, but was then quietly forgotten after only eight episodes on the air.

Iron Fist (2017 – 2018)

Iron Fist had a respectable two-season run before Netflix cut its losses. While the series did improve in its sophomore year, most critics remained unimpressed after a boring debut.

The Punisher (2017 – 2019)

The Punisher ran for two seasons on Netflix before the streamer canceled it. While critical reaction was mixed, the show did manage to snag an Emmy nomination. It didn’t win, though.

The Defenders (2017)

Marvel’s The Defenders was supposed to be the TV show version of the highly successful Avengers movie series. Considering how successful Jessica Jones proved for Netflix, the lack of interest in this team was likely hugely disappointing. But in reality, this group of beloved characters didn’t work well together.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)

To be fair, this series was relatively well-received but still garnered mixed reviews. It stars Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America / Falcolm and Sebastian Stan as the titular Winter Soldier and follows their adventures after the events in The Avengers: Endgame.

Runaways (2017 – 2019)

Runaways premiered on HULU in 2017 and ran for three seasons. This was one of those shows critics seemed to like, while audience response was mixed. Critics talked about how long the series took before it got to the exciting bits.

What If…? (2021)

This multiverse-y animation explores various What If…? scenarios. The critics were impressed, but MCU fans weren’t.

Helstrom (2020)

As the last MCU series to come out on Hulu, Helstrom didn’t get the warmest reception. On the contrary, the show about two vigilante siblings who happen to share a serial killer father barely got any attention, aside from a disappointing 27% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Agents of SHIELD (2013 – 2020)

When this show premiered over a decade ago on ABC, it was a huge and expected success. Yet with each passing season, viewership numbers kept dropping, and by the end of it, most people didn’t even know the show was still going.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)

To say this sitcom was divisive would be an understatement. Every single episode received some level of backlash from social media users, and some of the emerging memes are still around today. While audiences seemed to hate the series, critics had a lot of nice things to say, earning the controversial show an impressive rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
