Despite being over 50 years old, the Star Trek franchise has found new life amidst the modern streaming wars. Despite the cancellation of Star Trek: Discover, several new series have entered production, like Season 5 of the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks, as well as, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The franchise will also be making its return to the big screen, after the presumed end of J.J. Abrams’ trilogy starring Chris Pine (Dungeons & Dragons) as Captain Kirk.

The new feature film, Star Trek: Section 31, will see Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery. Section 31 was originally intended to be a spin-off show from Star Trek: Discovery, however, Paramount announced on Tuesday that the project will now be a feature film. The new movie is also the tip of the iceberg. According to THR, executive producer Alex Kurtzman is looking to produce a new Star Trek movie for Paramount+ every 2 years.

No titles or details have been announced for features past Section 31, however, with the rapid rebirth of the franchise for modern audiences, we likely won’t be waiting long for details on Paramount’s new plans.

Section 31 was reportedly transformed into a feature film after Kurtzman saw Michelle Yeoh‘s incredible performance in A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once, and realized that Yeoh would likely earn an Oscar for her performance.

According to sources, Section 31 will be heavily inspired by the tone and scope of Mission: Impossible and Guardians of the Galaxy, a statement which explains the need for the project to change from a weekly series to a feature film. Production on Source 31 is also scheduled to begin later this year.
