One of the earliest heartbreaks of childhood is the death of Mufasa in The Lion King (1994). For many children, this may have been the first introduction to the concept of death. It still breaks hearts today.

While Mufasa may have been the first death for many children in the 90s, kids in the 80s had another death to recover from. In The NeverEnding Story (1984), Artax ends up slowly sinking to his death. The scene remains a difficult one to watch due to the slow, but inevitable, death of Atreyu’s faithful steed.

Many Firefly (2002) fans flocked to theaters to see their favorite characters get a proper send-off on the big screen. Unfortunately, one of those goodbyes was a bit more permanent. The beloved character, Wash, did not end up surviving the events of the film.

It broke hearts in many a Browncoat’s chest.

Most Harry Potter book fans knew what they were walking into when they saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). Those who hadn’t read the book were in for a nasty surprise when Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather, unexpectedly died.

It was a turning point for Harry and the series as a whole.

Marley

Let’s be honest. If a movie has a dog in it, then it’s probably going to be a sad one. Such is the case in Marley & Me (2008). Audiences watch Marley grow old and eventually end up leaving the family behind forever.

No dog death is ever a good one.

Yondu

It’s clear that Yondu and Peter in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) have a bit of a stressed relationship. In a movie about family, Peter ends up realizing that Yondu is the real father figure he was looking for.

Unfortunately, he comes to that realization just as Yondu saves him and dies. As a fan favorite, Yondu’s death was tough to swallow for many.

Besides providing the world with one of the most classic memes in the history of the internet, Boromir also caused tears to flow in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). Sean Bean did a remarkable job of playing a character you don’t really like until the very end.

It also sparked the beginning of the many Bean deaths that would follow his career.
