Local scientist Emmet “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd) has discovered the secret to time travel. Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) inadvertently travels to 1955 using a time-traveling DeLorean. McFly is faced with erasing his existence if he makes the wrong move. After meeting his parents in the past, he must help them find their way to each other and perhaps improve the future along the way. The franchise has three installments, but no recent remakes are in the works.

Groundhog Day (1993) is more of a time-repeating than a time-travel film, but it’s certainly mind-bending. In the original “do over” film, cynical weatherman, Phil (Bill Murray), can’t stop waking up to repeat Groundhog Day. Through this repetitive comedy, Phil learns some valuable life lessons and finds love with television producer Rita (Andy MacDowell).

The Butterfly Effect (2004)

The Butterfly Effect (2004) stars Ashton Kutcher (That 70s Show) and Amy Smart (Just Friends) as childhood friends Evan and Kayleigh. Evan has suffered blackouts his whole life. As an adult, he realizes he has the power to go back to these blacked-out moments and change them. The only problem is how unpredictable these changes are, sometimes altering the fabric of time.

Idiocracy (2006)

The Lakehouse (2006)

A young doctor, Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock), is leaving the Lakehouse where she lives. She leaves a letter for the next tenant in the mailbox, only to receive a strange reply from the past. Forster finds herself communicating with Alex Wyler, the house’s last tenant. The twist? Wyler lives in 2004 and Forster in 2006. Based on the South Korean film Il Mare (2000), this award-winning drama leaves you rooting for star-crossed lovers everywhere.

Looper (2012)

In 2074 time travel is available for the very wealthy. The mob sends a target to the past, where hitman Joe Simmons (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) lies in wait in 2047. Joe goes by the pseudonym Looper. This time, the mob has sent back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis). To close the loop, Looper must kill himself. Will he get the job done? It’s a villain you secretly cheer on and simultaneously want to stop.

About Time (2013) follows Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson), a man with a genetic gift for time travel. His time travel genes were passed down by his father, played by Bill Nighy (Love Actually). Lake immediately tries to improve his love life but learns that he permanently alters his timeline each time he uses time travel.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) follows a classic Groundhog Day (1993) recipe. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is sent to the frontlines of a military battle against an alien race. The inexperienced Cage dies on the first day and is surprised to find himself awake and repeating the day over and over. That is until he meets Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). Vrataski had this gift before Cage and knows what he’s going through. Together they venture out again and again to save humanity.
