The bad guys in movies are not usually supposed to get empathy. But some films include such complex villains that audiences can’t help but cheer them on, even if they are on the side of evil.

From twisted charms to unexpected backstories, these films leave an indelible mark. Here are the 10 best movies with heart and villainy.

Blade Runner (1982)

Roy Batty from the original Blade Runner movie is a replicant seeking a longer lifespan. As his mortality looms, Batty’s actions reveal his humanity, as he’s trying to stand up against an oppressive system. Sure, his methods may be a bit unorthodox, but, like most people, he wants to figure out his purpose in the world.

Principal Edward Rooney is more relatable than the nightmare high school student he spends the whole film chasing around. The character embodies the frustrations and insecurities that arise when faced with a clever and rebellious teen, while his determination to maintain order is admirable.

Thor (2011)

Loki had a troubled upbringing and suffers from deep-rooted feelings of inadequacy and betrayal. As an adopted son of Odin, he constantly grapples with his identity and yearns for acceptance and validation. Sure, his actions may involve trying to commit genocide. But all he wants is love and acceptance.

Black Panther (2018)

Erik Killmonger’s tragic past and his quest for justice make him worthy of empathy. His actions, though extreme, stem from a deep-rooted desire to empower the marginalized. In many ways, Killmonger saw himself as the hero rather than the villain of the story.

The Dark Knight (2008)

The once-idealistic district attorney Harvey Dent fell into darkness after a personal tragedy and betrayal. His actions show how fragile human psychology is and how damaging grief and disillusionment can be.

Candyman (1992)

While the Candyman is terrifying, and saying his name three times in a mirror to give him an empathetic hug would be a terrible idea, there’s a lot of trauma behind the horror character. Born into slavery and brutally murdered for falling in love with a white woman, his vengeful actions are driven by a desire to seek justice and reclaim his identity.

Toy Story 2 (1999)

Stinky Pete the Prospector didn’t get to spend years in a loving home like Woody and Buzz did. Instead, he was kept in storage for years and treated like an art exhibit. While he is a villain, his actions are driven by a deep-rooted fear of being forgotten.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

The Grinch is not a bad guy; he just wants everyone to think he is. In reality, he wants to be left alone by the citizens of Whoville who bullied and abandoned him. As the story unfolds, audiences come to understand the Grinch’s loneliness and longing for acceptance.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

It’s hard to argue in Thano’s favor, but his intentions are pure. Sure, he destroys half of all life in the MUC, but it’s only because he noticed how overpopulation and scarcity are causing suffering.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
