Movie stars have been writing books for as long as movie stars have existed — but often, those books are memoirs. If you search for celebrity memoirs, you’ll find countless options in just about every area of fame.

Celebrity novelists are a bit less commonplace.

Here’s a list of 7 novels by celebrity authors!

Postcards from the Edge by Carrie Fisher

The late Carrie Fisher published Postcards from the Edge, a loosely autobiographical novel, in 1987. It was made into a movie in 1990.

The novel follows Suzanne Vale, an actress who is struggling with addiction, as she tries to get her life back on track. The story includes her journey to rehab and her attempts to confront the issues that led to her addiction. As she works on herself, she also has to examine her strained relationship with her mother, a famous actress.

Postcards from the Edge was well-reviewed and has continued to be loved by readers.

Montaro Caine by Sidney Poitier

The publisher’s synopsis for Montaro Caine by the legendary actor Sidney Poitier reads:

When a coin is found in a baby’s hand, the doctor who finds it sends it up to a lab at MIT, where Montaro Caine, a student, does a work-up on it and discovers it to be made of materials not known on Earth. Caine never learns the owner’s identity, but two decades later, as Caine, now CEO of Fitzer Corp in New York City, is facing the possibility of a hostile corporate takeover and experiencing family troubles, a man and woman appear in his office bearing the coin. The find sets off a battle of intrigue and suspense, as scientists, collectors, and financiers all vie to get their hands on it. But the coin, and a second coin that appears, is of more value than mere monetary worth. In this ambitious, page-turning novel, the beloved actor Sidney Poitier takes us from New York to Europe to the Caribbean in an exploration of race, faith, and, beyond all else, the meaning of our lives on earth.

An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin

The follow-up to his novella Shopgirl, this book tells the story of Lacey Yeager, an ambitious young woman who uses her wits to climb the ranks through the Manhattan art world. The New York Times wrote that Lacey’s character was somewhat under-developed, but that Martin’s knowledge of the art scene made the book work:

“An Object of Beauty” either cannot or will not separate the power of art from the fetishistic, status-driven behavior that the big-ticket art market engenders. The knowingly nuanced descriptions of this behavior are at the book’s real heart. Mr. Martin, as notable for his serious art collecting as for so many other things, could not have written so knowingly about this culture without being part of it, however vicariously. How else could he describe Thursday night as “prom night for the smart set” at Chelsea galleries, “a night to be smug, cool, to dress up or dress down, and to bring into focus everything one loves about oneself and make it tangible.” How else would he know that paintings can be collected not only because of the way they look “but because of a winding path that leads a collector to his prey”?

An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin – Lacey Yeager is an ambitious young woman who is determined to climb the ranks of the art world. The novel follows her rise to success as a gallery owner in New York City and her relationships with the artists, collectors, and colleagues that she encounters along the way.

Tommy’s Tale by Alan Cumming

Alan Cumming published Tommy’s Tale in 2002, before his subsequent memoirs came out. The novel follows Tommy, a hedonistic protagonist who is trying to navigate the complexities of relationships, sex, and love in London. Terrified of commitment, Tommy’s life changes dramatically when he begins to feel a strange urge: to become a father. The book’s reviews were mixed, with a 3.6 on Goodreads.

Modelland by Tyra Banks

Modellland doesn’t have great reviews, but fans of the famous model may enjoy the “behind the scenes” glimpses into the world of modeling in this book. It tells the story of Tookie De La Crème, who gets admitted into an exclusive modeling academy. Tookie feels awkward and gawky, but she and three other unlikely models find themselves in a surprising setting: Modelland, which sits at the top of a mountain. This isn’t just an ordinary modeling academy, though. There are sinister secrets hiding behind the challenges that Tookie and her new friends face.

Truly Like Lightning by David Duchovny

Like many other actors-turned-writers, David Duchovny wrote a novel with a connection to Hollywood. His main character, Bronson Powers, is a former stuntman from Hollywood who has moved to a remote desert community in Joshua Tree where he and his family can live simply and self-sufficiently.

Powers’s life is anything but conventional. He converted to Mormonism and now has three wives and ten children. They are trying to live a completely insulated life, safe from the “corruption” of the outside world. All that is threatened when Maya Abbadessa, a young property developer, comes across the Powers family.

The book’s reviews were mixed, with some people enjoying the plot but others calling the writing pretentious and the characters unlikeable.

When It Happens to You: A Novel in Stories by Molly Ringwald

Molly Ringwald’s novel is made up of intertwined short stories, many of which take place in LA. The characters in her stories are dealing with complex relationships, infertility, infidelity, fame, and more. Although the reviews are somewhat mixed on GoodReads, I noticed that the people who loved this book REALLY loved it. Even the less-than-stellar reviews still had mostly positive things to say about Ringwald’s writing and storytelling.
