The superhero boom has somewhat died down in recent years, with Marvel’s newest slate of films being empty shells of what they once were. However, they are nothing compared to some of these movies, which are universally regarded as the worst superhero movies ever made.

The Punisher

There have been many attempts to bring The Punisher to life, with Netflix doing the best job so far. Amidst those attempts is the terrible 2004 feature film starring Thomas Jane as Frank Castle, which takes one of Marvel’s most unique powerless anti-heroes and throws him into a bland, overly violent, and overwhelmingly boring revenge flick.

Elektra

If you thought things couldn’t get worse than 2003’s Daredevil starring Ben Affleck, then boy are you wrong. Following Jennifer Garner’s character from that film, Elektra is the dreadful continuation of her story which heavily suffers from a tone-def script and unintelligent dialogue.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

Sometimes less is more, and that is certainly the case with the amount of Superman sequels that were being released in the 80s. Superman IV‘s VFX looks cheap, the action is dull, and, worst of all, none of the actors look like they even want to be there.

Catwoman

There have been some great iterations of Catwoman on the big screen, like Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic portrayal and the Zoe Kravitz’s recent iteration, but Halle Berry’s standalone movie certainly isn’t one of them. Donning an overtly sexual leather harness, 2004’s Catwoman changes almost every iconic aspect of the character and puts her in an action film filled with too many questionable choices to count.

Hellboy

Guillermo Del Toro’s two Hellboy films have reached cult status within the Superhero cinema community; however, many fans were still excited to see Stranger Things star David Harbour take on the role in 2019. Sadly, the resulting film fell flat on its face, with a lazy script, jokes that never land, and a few irritating performances. Expectedly though, David Harbour was great; it’s just sad we’ll probably never see him play the character again.

Green Lantern

Despite an expectedly charming performance from Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern is a failure in almost every department; terrible CGI, a lazy plot, and bland action culminate in a superhero film littered with questionable choices. It’s not all bad though, as he did meet his future wife, Blake Lively, on the set of this film.

Steel

If you’ve never seen or heard of Steel, it’s worth a watch just to witness how terrible it is. Starring Shaquille O’Neal – yep, that Shaquille O’Neal – as John Henry Irons, who must use his alter-ego Steel to stop the weapons maker Burke before he causes global disaster.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Based on a comic by one of the most lorded comics writers of all time, Alan Moore, it’s hard to understand how The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen went so wrong, with one review simply calling it “Appalingly stupid and incompetently made.”

Fantastic Four

While the original Fantastic Four films were never going to win Oscars, they were still fun action films that brought Marvel’s first family to life. Sadly, a reboot was always going to happen, and 2015 brought a great cast together (that included Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell) into an overwhelmingly lazy and ugly superhero flick that is better left forgotten.

Batman & Robin

The most infamously bad film on this list, Batman & Robin has actually now attained cult status due to how terrible it is as a Batman film. Overwhelmed with bad dialogue and narrative choices that were more concerned with marketing new toys than creating a decent movie, Batman & Robin put the character into hiatus at Warner Bros. until Christopher Nolan stepped in with 2005’s Batman Begins.
