Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

Ever wondered how too much CGI could ruin a movie? We’ve curated a list of the top 10 such cinema missteps. Get ready to see film effects in a new light!

1. The Mummy Returns (2001)

While CGI was only starting to become popular around the time The Mummy Returns was in production, even its CGI was terrible to behold. In particular, the CGI that made the Rock into the Scorpion King was something truly terrible.

2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

While the Lord of the Rings trilogy succeeded with its practical effects, the Hobbit series decided to go the CGI route. It doesn’t hold up nearly as well as the original trilogy. Characters made entirely out of CGI just look plain out of place.

3. Wonder Woman (2017)

While most of the CGI holds up decently well in Wonder Woman, there’s one part where it’s just atrocious. The final battle scene between Wonder Woman and Aries is practically entirely CGI. It looks terrible which isn’t great news for a climatic battle.

4. The Thing (2011)

A remake of the original movie was bound to fail the moment the studio chose CGI over practical effects. The reason that the first movie is such a classic is its gory SFX. The CGI in this film completely takes away the terror.

5. The Flash (2023)

If it’s a superhero movie, then it’s probably going to have CGI. Studios making superhero movies should budget for high-quality CGI. The Flash did not receive that budget. Its CGI looks years older than it should for a movie made in 2023.

6. The Lion King (2019)

While the CGI in the latest version of The Lion King is decent, Disney first advertised this film as live-action. With that sort of lens, The Lion King’s CGI falls flat. It’s very clear that the animals are CGI and not real.

7. The Irishman (2019)

Martin Scorsese should have nothing to do with CGI in his films. His use of it in The Irishman made certain scenes look hilarious despite their serious tone. It was so bad that it was funny. The blood, in particular, just looked comical.

8. The Matrix: Reloaded (2003)

While some of the CGI in The Matrix series is forgivable, there’s one sequence that’s difficult to watch. When Neo has to fight a bunch of duplicate Smiths, the CGI can’t quite handle it all. It basically ends up looking like a poor video game.

9. The Mist (2007)

For a movie where its main scare is the atmosphere, you better make sure you capture it perfectly. The Mist failed to do that. It relied too heavily on CGI. The problem with that is that the CGI has aged terribly over the years. Any scary factor has completely been destroyed.

10. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Of all the Harry Potter films, it’s this one where the studio got a little too excited using CGI. The film sticks out from the others as looking out of place. Even the CGI, itself, tends to take you out of the film because of how poor it is.
