Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

Surprise yourself with 10 outstanding films that suffer from lackluster titles. Give these underrated gems a chance, and you might just find your new favorite movie. Check to see which movies make the list.

1. Layer Cake (2004)

If you were to see the title Layer Cake, then you probably would expect some movie about a bakery. The movie is actually about a drug dealer who ends up receiving two jobs just as he’s about to retire.

The title did the movie no favors.

2. The Constant Gardener (2005)

This movie sounds like it’s about gardening. It’s actually about a man who goes to great depths to discover the truth about his wife’s murder. It involves corporate corruption and big business dealings.

Nothing about gardening at all.

3. John Carter (2012)

John Carter reads like a biopic. It’s actually about a Civil War vet who ends up transported to a new world where he has to save an alien race. Nothing about that title works for this film.

4. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

The Shawshank Redemption has become a classic, but it didn’t perform well in theaters. Part of the reason is because of its name. No one understood it, and it didn’t exactly give “prison movie” vibes either.

5. Ninja Assassin (2009)

Some movie titles are just laughable because of how incredulous they sound. Ninja Assassin suffers from this. It’s a generic title that doesn’t immediately draw you to the film.

6. Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

At first, the title of this movie works. It describes exactly what to expect from the film. It also makes it seem as though the movie is going to be fun and a bit silly. The movie is actually quite dark. Viewers won’t exactly know what they’re signing up for in terms of content with a title like that.

7. The Accountant (2016)

Let’s be honest here, no one is going to want to see a movie called The Accountant. There are literal jokes about accountants being the most boring people and having the most boring jobs ever. It’s a pity since the movie is actually quite a tense thriller.

8. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)

Although the name for this movie comes from how the judge described Ted Bundy, it does not work great as a movie title. It’s just too long. Unless you’re familiar with the case, the title is also probably lost on you.

9. Braveheart (1995)

Braveheart is a great movie depicting the resistance of Scottish clans against English Imperialism. However, the title of the movie doesn’t immediately indicate what audience members are going to watch.

You wouldn’t know the movie is about William Wallace or the Scottish resistance based on its title alone.

10. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

A lot of people missed out on this hilarious film starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer simply because of its title. The movie’s title does a poor job of pulling interest into the film.

It also does nothing to suggest the movie’s theme which is a comedic crime mystery. With a different title, the movie likely would have performed a lot better in theaters.
