Science fiction can show us alternate versions of our own world one minute and transport us to distant galaxies and multiverses the next. Netflix is packed full of amazing science fiction movies, but to save you time endlessly scrolling, we’ve compiled the very best for you to sink your teeth into.
Annihilation
If science fiction met the stories of H.P Lovecraft, the result would be Annihilation. When her husband is lost in an unidentifiable ‘Dead Zone’, former soldier and biologist Lena is sent in to uncover the mystery of the surreal space and bring her husband back.
Starship Troopers
A hilarious, and surprisingly deep satire of America’s glorification of war, Starship Troopers has become something of a cult classic of the genre. After recently graduating and joining the Mobile Infantry, Johnny Rico soon finds himself fighting giant alien bugs who are hell-bent on consuming Earth.
Dune
Denis Villeneuve returns for a second entry on this list with his phenomenal adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic. After his family is ordered to oversee the desert planet of Arrakis, Paul Atreides finds himself caught in a war between ancient families, desert natives, misguided prophecies and ancient creatures.
Arrival
From Denis Villeneuve – who’ll appear again on this list later – Arrival is a unique science fiction story, adapted from Ted Chiang’s novel Story of Your Life about alien linguistics and translations. When a mysterious spaceship lands on earth, linguistics expert Louise Banks is tasked with interpreting the extraterrestrial species’s unique form of communication.
They Cloned Tyrone
One of Netflix’s newer original films, They Cloned Tyrone is a hilariously dark rip on Blacksploitation films and a cultural critique of the social landscape of America. To say anything about the film’s plot would spoil it, but They Cloned Tyrone follows a series of eerie events which propel an unlikely trio into the centre of a government conspiracy.
Okja
Directed by Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), Okja is a moving tale of friendship. When Okja, Mija’s ginormous animal companion, is stolen and transported to New York at the whim of an image-obsessed CEO, Mija sets out on a daring rescue mission.
I Am Mother
Based on a YouTube short film of the same name, I Am Mother is set in an apocalyptic world where humanity is on the brink of extinction. In a bunker, a sentient robot attempts to raise a young girl as best as it can, but the unexpected arrival of another human throws its teachings into question.
Bubble
Bubble is a surreal sci-fi anime by Director Tetsurō Araki (Attack on Titan). When gravity-defying bubbles rain down and cut off Tokyo from the rest of the world, the city skyline becomes a playground for parkour-obsessed youngsters who compete in team battles.
Edge of Tomorrow
Take Groundhog Day and throw in brutal killer aliens and Tom Cruise for good measure and I give you Edge of Tomorrow. After finding himself on the frontlines of a war against an invading species, Major William Cage finds himself caught in a time-loop forcing him to try and save Earth and the human race.
Tenet
From legendary director Christopher Nolan, Tenet takes the director’s signature time-bending antics to a new level. When futuristic weapons fall into the wrong hands, the CIA operative known only as the Protagonist must save the world using time-bending technology that causes time to move backward for some.
