Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

Discover the unsettling reality of fame as we delve into the experiences of 10 actors mistreated by fans and media. These celebrities didn’t deserve the kind of hate and ridicule they received.

Katherine Heigl

During the promotional tour of Knocked Up (2007), Heigl didn’t have anything too positive to say about the movie’s story. She claimed that she felt the plot was a bit sexist in that it painted women as cold and unfeeling while writing off the sexist behavior of guys.

As you might expect, the media jumped on this and tore her apart.

Josh McDermitt

Playing Eugene on The Walking Dead (2010-2022) has been a blessing and a curse for Josh McDermitt. Following a certain scene, fans quickly turned on the character. Some even started sending death threats to McDermitt. It got to the point where he had to say he was going to report those to the police.

Fans seem to forget that actors typically don’t have any stake in what the writers put on the page for them to do.

Hayden Christensen

Star Wars fans have a love-hate relationship with their favorite franchise. When something new comes out, you can always expect some group within the fandom to tear down an actor. Unfortunately, Hayden Christensen was the source of vitriol for the prequel Star Wars films.

The main voice of the fandom at the time didn’t understand his choice of acting, and much of the hate should have gone toward the writers, anyway.

Thankfully, Christensen is finally getting the love he deserves for his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker.

Robert Pattinson

No one dislikes Twilight (2008) quite as much as Robert Pattinson. A large part of that is because of the treatment he received from fans. They regularly disparaged his performance as Edward Cullen despite the fact that the character was written that way.

Luckily, Pattinson has been able to prove his acting chops in films worth his talents.

Jack Gleeson

One of the most hated characters in television history is Joffrey Baratheon. The unfortunate actor who brought this character to life was Jack Gleeson. He received lots of hate from fans for his portrayal of the tyrant. While he planned to retire from acting after the role, one can’t help but wonder if the treatment he received from fans cemented that decision.

Edward Norton

It’s hard to imagine why anyone would hate Edward Norton, but there was a period of time in which the media did not portray him well. Following his girlfriend’s reveal that Harvey Weinstein had been harassing her, he called Weinstein out on it.

This was before the tables turned on Weinstein, so the media was quick to turn on Norton instead for defending his girlfriend.

Halle Bailey

When the actress who’d be portraying the live-action version of Ariel in the new The Little Mermaid (2023) movie was revealed, there was a ton of questionable backlash. A lot of attention went to the color of her skin rather than whether her acting was up to par or not.

It brought out the worst in a lot of people.

Marilyn Monroe

The media was never kind to Marilyn Monroe. If they weren’t objectifying her and making her a sex symbol, then they were talking about her drug problems. When her affair with JFK was revealed, once more, she was ripped apart in the media.

The media still doesn’t do her justice to this day.

Anne Hathaway

For some odd reason, there’s a whole community out there that regularly hates on Anne Hathaway. The actress has done nothing to warrant that hate. Yet, whenever she has a new movie coming out or is attending an event, you can always expect people to come out of the woodwork to say some awful things about her.

Will Smith

Will Smith caused quite a stir during the Oscars when he slapped Chris Rock. The comedian had just finished telling a joke at Jada Pinkett Smith’s expense. Smith took to the stage to defend his wife and smacked Rock.

The media and industry quickly turned their backs on Smith. While the situation certainly could have been handled better, and privately, the type of treatment Smith has received is insane compared to the behavior of other celebrities.
