Netflix’s library of Western series is unsurprisingly limited, considering the genre peaked way before the turn of the millennium and only makes brief appearances in cinemas every year or two. However, despite the limited quantity of Western shows, the series that Netflix does have available is filled with hidden gems that are absolutely worth the watch.
Godless
After a mining accident kills almost all of the men in a small town, the women are left to pick up the pieces and defend their homes from the violent criminal Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) and his gang. Alongside its intriguing premise, Godless features gorgeous cinematography, incredible performances all round, and some purely brutal action.
Cowboy Bebop
Moving away from the traditional Western, to an animated space-Western, Cowboy Bebop follows intergalactic bounty hunter Spike Spiegel and the small crew of the Bebop as they trek across the galaxy hunting bounties and trying to get by. As well as its beautiful animation and surprisingly deep narrative, Cowboy Bebop is renowned for having one of the best soundtracks in all of anime. Just don’t confuse it with the terrible 2021 live-action remake.
Spirit Riding Free
Based on one of Dreamwork’s most underrated animated movies, Spirit Riding Free is a light-hearted, funny spin-off series following the titular horse as he’s adopted by a young girl on a ranch. Spirit Riding Free is definitely one for the children, but like any good kids show, features enough laughs to keep the adults entertained to.
Frontier
Set a little earlier than most classic Westerns, Frontier follows criminal trapper Declan Harp (Jason Momoa) as he looks to make a name for himself in the fur trade during the late 1700s. Frontier features incredible performances all around and is definitely Momoa’s best performance in a Netflix product.
The Ranch
If there’s one location fundamental to a good Western, regardless of its time period, it’s a ranch. This Netflix original sitcom follows Colt, who returns to his family’s ranch after the downturn of his failed football career. The Ranch stars Ashton Kutcher, Sam Elliot, Danny Masterson, and Elisha Cuthbert.
