It introduced a diverse range of genres and initiated the rise of Indie cinema with directors like Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Kevin Smith (Mall Rats). Scream (1996)

Scream (1996) was one of many high school slasher movies popular in the 90s. The film takes place in the small town of Woodsboro, one year after the death of Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) mother. A masked serial killer is terrorizing the town, and Prescott and her friends are the main targets. With Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), Prescott tries to solve the mystery behind the murders before she’s next.

Titanic (1997) is as classic 90s as films get. This memorable hit follows the RMS Titanic on its doomed voyage across the Atlantic. With flashbacks between the past and modern times, viewers watch a forbidden romance unfold between passengers, Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet). Bukater’s wealthy and disdainful fiancé, Cal Hockley (Billy Zane), tries to get in the way. Eventually, the ship and its passengers plunge into the icy waters below. Titanic was directed by James Cameron (The Terminator).

The Matrix (1999)

In The Matrix (1999), computer hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) is introduced to a mind-bending reality. Neo meets the enigmatic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) who believe him to be “the chosen one”. Soon Neo learns that the world as he knows it, is a simulated construct created by powerful machines that have enslaved humanity. The Matrix used high-quality special effects to make the surreal action scenes look realistic. It was a big deal in 90s cinema.
