2013 doesn’t seem like that far in the past and yet it is already 10 years ago…

In 2013, Obama was inaugurated for the second time. That was the year Edward Snowden leaked documents about the NSA’s surveillance programs to The Guardian and The Washington Post. Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95, and Pope Francis became the 266th pope of the Catholic Church.

10 years ago, the celebrities Peter O’Toole, James Gandolfini, Cory Monteith, Roger Ebert, and Paul Walker died.

A lot of important movies came out in 2013, and unimportant ones, too. The highest-grossing film of the year was Iron-Man 3, followed by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in second and Despicable Me 2 in third. Argo won Best Picture at the Oscars, and R.I.P.D. was one of the biggest flops, losing $51.7 million.

Here’s a list of 20 movies you might have a hard time believing are already 10 years old.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, a wealthy stockbroker who engaged in fraud and corruption on Wall Street in the 1990s. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Jonah Hill), Best Director (Martin Scorcese), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Terence Winter).

12 Years a Slave

A free black man from upstate New York is abducted and sold into slavery in the pre-Civil War South, and must fight for his survival and freedom for over a decade. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, and it won Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o), and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley).

Frozen

A Disney-animated musical about a fearless princess named Anna who embarks on a journey with a rugged iceman named Kristoff, his loyal reindeer, and a naive snowman to find her estranged sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.

American Hustle

Inspired by the ABSCAM scandal of the late 1970s, a con man and his partner are forced to work with a federal agent to bring down corrupt politicians and mobsters in New Jersey. American Hustle stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, and others. It was directed by David O. Russell, who has a track record of being both aggressive and abusive.

Captain Phillips

The true story of the 2009 hijacking of the US container ship Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates, and the heroic efforts of its captain to save his crew. Captain Phillips stars Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi. Abdi was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, the film follows the wealthy and mysterious Jay Gatsby as he pursues his lost love, Daisy Buchanan, amid the excesses and corruption of the Roaring Twenties. The adaptation stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick, and Carey Mulligan as Daisey.
