This summer, millions of Americans will head off into the wilderness for a camping trip. State Parks, National Parks, KOA campgrounds, and even backyards all bring opportunities to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Camping is a great way to get in touch with nature and disconnect from devices and technology.

In the movies, though, camping trips are often the set-up for treacherous journeys, dangerous villains, and lots of suspense. Here are 4 movies about camping trips that went terribly, horribly wrong.

Deliverance (1972)

In Deliverance, four friends from Atlanta take a canoe trip down a remote Georgia river. Their encounters with local backwoods residents lead to a series of violent engagements that just keep escalating as the movie goes on. The movie is known for its disturbing scenes (including a scene of sexual assault) and high levels of suspense.

It also has a famous “dueling banjos” scene early in the film, in which the character of Drew (played by Ronnie Cox) plays guitar with a banjo-playing child.

The movie also stars Jon Voigt, Burt Reynolds, and Ned Beatty.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

The Blair Witch Project is made to look like found footage of a group of three student filmmakers who are trying to document the local legend of the Blair Witch in the Black Hills Forest of Maryland. The three filmmakers venture into the forest and begin to experience strange phenomena.

The stylized filming on handheld cameras meant that many moviegoers were convinced that the footage was real, even though it was 100% fictional.

Even so, the movie would make anyone want to rethink camping in an area with a history of supernatural beings and dangerous natural threats.

The Ritual (2017)

This British horror movie is about a group of four friends who go hiking in Sweden to honor the memory of their recently murdered friend — and terrible things start to happen in the wilderness. Nightmares, injuries, monsters, and terrifying mysteries unfold. This movie does a great job of blending folk horror and survivalist to tell a compelling story –the movie has a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Watching this one before a camping trip might make you start wondering if everything you see is a sign of something evil in the woods.

Backcountry (2014)

A couple on a camping trip in the Canadian wilderness is stalked by a black bear. Based on a true story, Backcountry has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is known for being thrilling and suspenseful. It’s a great survival story but it will definitely give you pause if you’re camping in bear country. Or, if you’re like my family, you’ll be convinced there are bears right outside of your tent even if you live thousands of miles away from bear country.

If you hate camping and want to get out of a camping trip planned by your friends or family, maybe you should suggest one of these movies for your next movie night! It might just help you get out of the camping trip!
