Not even fame can save some celebrities from sudden death. Whether it’s disease, injury, or an accident, death comes for everyone. Read on as we uncover the remarkable stories of these celebrities and their brushes with mortality.

1. Jeremy Renner

It takes some kind of superhero strength to survive what Jeremy Renner went through in January of 2023. At his home in Nevada, Renner was helping a member of his family plow the snow from the driveway.

Some people use a snow shovel while others put a plow on their cars, but Renner had a 14,000-pound PistenBully that he used to clear the driveways. While operating it, he somehow fell out of the plow and the massive machine rolled over him.

Renner wrote messages to his family on his phone because he didn’t think he was going to survive the ordeal. Luckily, Renner made it to the hospital where the doctors stabilized him.

2. Zac Efron

While filming his show about exploring the wider world, Zac Efron ended up contracting a life-threatening disease in Papua New Guinea. The disease was on par with typhoid based on its danger to human life.

From New Guinea, Efron had to fly all the way to Australia to receive proper medical aid. He remained there for several days. Luckily, he pulled through and was able to return home for Christmas.

3. Emilia Clarke

The Mother of Dragons faced her own health scare early in the making of the hit series, Game of Thrones (2011 – 2019). After working out in the gym, she suffered a brain aneurysm that completely floored her.

Clarke was unable to remember much when she first came to consciousness following surgery. It was also discovered during surgery that she had a second aneurysm that needed removal.

During the filming of the second season, Clarke felt terrified that she would die any day.

4. Isla Fisher

Sometimes stunts can put an actor’s life in real danger. Such was the case when Fisher was filming a stunt for the movie, Now You See Me (2013). It was an underwater scene, and Fisher’s chain to keep her submerged became tangled and stuck.

She held her breath for around three minutes while everyone thought she was just acting. Luckily, someone came to their senses and pulled the safety latch, allowing her to escape.

5. Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio has faced not one but two near-death experiences. The first was when he was diving in South Africa. While locked in a shark cage, he was watching a great white shark eat tuna when a large wave crashed into the cage. The shark ended up halfway inside the cage and was biting around to try and free itself.

DiCaprio pushed himself flat on the bottom of the cage to avoid the shark’s bites.

The second time, DiCaprio was skydiving with an instructor. Both his first and second parachutes were unable to deploy due to tangling. They were halfway down when the instructor finally managed to untangle the chute and open it.

They landed hard, but since they both barrel-rolled on impact, they kept their legs from breaking.

6. George Clooney

Men and women across the world would have been in great mourning if George Clooney had followed through with some dark thoughts he once experienced. While filming Syriana (2005), Clooney broke his back.

The pain from the injury was so great that Clooney felt as though he was having headaches typical of a stroke. For three weeks he was in absolute agony. The pain became so much that he even contemplated suicide.

7. Anne Hathaway

The ocean can be a dangerous place to swim. Anne Hathaway learned that the hard way while vacationing in Hawaii. In 2014, she was swimming in the water when a sudden riptide swept her away from the shore.

Unable to escape, she was in danger of drowning when a nearby surfer managed to pull her up and to safety.

8. Johnny Depp

Flying can be unsafe as Johnny Depp quickly discovered in 2011. He and Bruce Robinson were enjoying a flight when the engines of the plane suddenly quit. There was a moment of absolute silence as the two men just stared at one another.

Depp even wondered if this was the moment he was going to die. Fortunately, the engines of the plane miraculously turned back on, and they were able to land safely.

9. Joaquin Phoenix

There’s no question that Joaquin Phoenix has seen his share of tragedy. In 2006, he almost faced his own tragedy first-hand. While driving his car, the brakes to his car suddenly stopped working. Unable to stop, he rammed into the car in front of him and flipped his car.

Injured from the crash, he received help from Werner Herzog who happened to live by the area. Phoenix managed to get out of the car, but it would take some time to recover from his injuries.

10. Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom proved that even if you’re young, death is always knocking at your door. At the age of 21, he was attempting to climb a drain pipe. He made it up three stories before falling and breaking his back.

He ended up paralyzed for some time until his back began to heal.
