Some movies should just be left alone. Especially those beloved classic movies boomers hold close to their chest. And yet, we seem to live in an era when every other movie release is a remake of a feature that saw some success when it first came out.
While we could spend the next few hours debating the worth of these remakes in the grand scheme of cinematic history, none of the titles on this list should have ever seen the light of the silver screen. Here is our top 10 list of terrible millennial remakes boomers (and everyone else) hate.
Flatliners (2017)
The remake of the 1990 namesake thriller about medical students experimenting with death was far from well-received. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a low score of 4%, with the critical consensus describing the movie as “dead on arrival.”
When a Stranger Calls (2006)
Fred Walton’s 1979 When a Stranger Calls gained a cult following. Unfortunately, its 2006 remake failed to scare anyone into caring where the phone call was coming from.
Get Carter (2000)
In 1979, Michael Caine starred in one of the most acclaimed British gangster movies to ever hit the silver screen. Two decades later, the actor returned for the Get Carter remake no one wanted or needed.
Mulan (2020)
While the Disney live-action remakes of classics deserve their own list, Mulan might just be the worst of them. The 2020 version of the tale didn’t just remove all the music numbers we’ve come to adore, but it got rid of Mushu, our favorite dragon. One simply cannot have Mulan without Mushu.
The Wicker Man (2006)
The modern version of The Wicker Man is a pale imitation of the original British folk horror. However, the 2006 film does feature one of the most over-the-top and meme-able Nicolas Cage performances ever. Not The Bees!
Total Recall (2012)
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s original from the 90s wasn’t exactly a good movie, but it was set on Mars and it was a lot of fun to watch. Sadly, the 2012 remake fell into the trap of taking itself too seriously, which is probably why it flopped so hard.
Carrie (2013)
Stephen King’s book about a shy, bullied teen with telekinesis has seen many adaptations throughout the decades. But the original 1976 starring Sissy Spacek version is, by far, the only one worth watching. Most people who’ve seen the 2013 horror remake agree.
Oldboy (2013)
Any remake of the 2003 Korean classic was doomed to fail because of how brilliant the original is. To no one’s surprise, Spike Lee’s 2013 version of Oldboy didn’t come anywhere near the original’s greatness.
Annie (2014)
The contemporary movie based on the 70s hit Broadway musical failed to impress anyone. Not only was the film critically panned, but it won a Golden Razzie for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off, or Sequel.
Ben-Hur (2016)
2016’s Ben-Hur was the fifth and arguably the worst adaptation of Lew Wallace’s religious epic. The film was so disliked, that it grossed below its budget, a far cry from the 1959 adaptation that made history when it won 11 Oscars.
