Will Butterworth first started reporting on entertainment news when he was a kid in Barney pajamas giving news reports to his parents while sitting in a cardboard box. Now, he still sits in a cardboard box, but his audience has grown in number (at least that's what his mom tells him). Entertainment junkies unite!

Dive into an exciting revelation about 10 films whose director’s cut didn’t quite hit the mark. This captivating read will have you reevaluating your favorite movies.

1. Apocalypse Now (1979)

The original Apocalypse Now has excellent pacing. It shows just enough of Willard’s journey to give an intimate experience of the Vietnam War. However, the director’s cut adds in scenes like the visit to the French colonists that interrupt the otherwise tense and surreal pace of the movie.

2. Dumb and Dumber (1994)

It’s hard not to love Jim Carry and Jeff Daniels’ idiotic characters in the original cut of the film. However, the director’s cut completely changes who their characters are and how they act. They become unlikeable which makes the whole movie difficult to watch.

3. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)

Old and new Star Wars fans will always have something to complain about with each trilogy. However, one argument that unifies them is the use of CGI in the 1970s films.

In the director’s cut, CGI replaces some of the practical effects in the film. It makes the movie, somehow, look even older and ruins the aesthetic of the film.

4. Donnie Darko (2001)

The original cut of Donnie Darko makes it a surreal film that plays like a dream–or nightmare. However, because of its dream-like state, some people involved with the film feared that audiences wouldn’t understand it.

So, a director’s cut came out where the plot and various visions were over-explained. If you have to explain Donnie Darko, then you’re basically missing the point of the movie’s themes.

5. Payback (1999)

Movies starring Mel Gibson tend to have their share of controversy. If you were to watch this film’s theatrical cut and the director’s cut, then you’d be watching two different films. The look of the film is different in the director’s cut.

They also removed jokes and even entire characters from the movie.

6. Troy (2004)

There have been a few versions of Troy starring Brad Pitt. One of the worst is the director’s cut. It features new scenes, which don’t add much to the overall story on their own, but it’s the music that’s the real problem.

Troy had the incredible James Horner compose its music. Yet, the deleted scenes clearly don’t have Horner’s compositions which makes them sound completely out of place. They become jarring to watch.

7. The Town (2010)

A typical heist movie has a pretty straightforward narrative. The Town’s theatrical cut has great pacing and flows well. When Ben Affleck decided to release his director’s cut version, however, some problems seriously occurred.

Continuity errors are the main bane of this version of the film. It’s like some characters completely forgot what they had already told other characters. It’s a mess.

8. The Exorcist (1973)

When the original The Exorcist came out in theaters, it terrified audiences everywhere. The movie had great pacing which introduced one terror after another.

As loved as the movie is, some of its alternative versions are only filled with problems. The director’s cut adds in scenes that completely ruin the pacing of the movie. It becomes less scary and more of a slog to get through.

9. That Thing You Do! (1996)

This movie follows a young band that ends up coming out with a huge hit. Unfortunately, they’re unable to release any other great singles after the fact. The original cut has just the right pacing and follows each character’s struggle as the band slowly falls apart.

When the director’s cut came out, the movie had even more scenes added to it. The problem is that these scenes were primarily filler content. They didn’t even feature any members of the main cast. It makes the film a bore to watch.

10. The Butterfly Effect (2004)

The Butterfly Effect was a unique movie starring Ashton Kutcher. In the film, Evan discovers a journal that helps him relive past memories. He’s also able to alter those memories and change certain events of his past.

The original cut provides a possible happy ending for Evan. The director’s cut paints a much more bleak ending. It shows Evan going back to his birth and suffocating himself with his own umbilical cord. The cut forces the dark ending instead of giving Evan the chance to correct his choices and end up with a happier ending.
